The word "Diamond" is derived from the Greek word "ADAMAS" which means "invincible". Diamonds are
amongst  the  hardest  substances  and  imperishable.
Online shopping for diamonds is a safer bet as payments are processed over secure servers of online diamond merchants. Reputed online merchants in business for a reasonable period of time offer usually 30 or 60 days refund policy.     In case you are not satisfied or defrauded in some manner by the online merchant ask for a "ChargeBack" with your credit card company.    Chargeback is refund of money for unauthorised transaction on your card or if you have been defrauded through non-receipt of your required diamond / colored stone or jewelry as per your specifications.

Diamonds Basic Guide

select shape: select price:
(1) Diamonds they say are forever.  Diamonds have been a store of beauty and value since ages.
Go for the Best Diamond your pocket can buy , even though the thumb rule is  two month's salary .

So what is the BEST diamond?  Diamond with the combination of the Best 4 Cs ( i.e  Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat Weight)  ratings is rarer , so more valuable.  The   4 Cs  collectively impart  intrinsic value  to  a diamond . As far as possible go for the stone with best ratings that fits your purse.
(2) Certification from independent Diamond Certifying Bodies  like  American Gemological Society  (AGS) ,  Gemological  Institute   of  America (GIA) ,  International   Gemological Institute  (IGI) ,  European  Gemological  Laboratory  (EGL) ,  Diamond  High  Council is advisable  to  know the specifications of your stone i.e  4Cs , its measurements , its finish, proportions , depth percentages , the stone's fluorescence  and  any other remarks on  the stone's imperfections. Certification describes the quality of a diamond , but does not place  a  monetary value to it. Certification is a proof of a diamond's identity. It costs approx. U.S $ 80 for the first carat  and  after  that  increases  incrementally  to  the  carat  weight.
(4) CUT of a diamond refers to the finesse of its polishing and the right placement of each facet of the stone. A stone  is  IDEALLY  cut when its dimensions are within established scientific ranges which enables it to refract the light entering it back to the top giving a lot of brilliance. Diamonds cut  too deep or too shallow lose light that spills through  the sides or the bottom.  As far  as possible go for a stone with an " IDEAL "  cut which is the best. The " PREMIUM " and the " GOOD " cuts are the next best possibilities.
(5) CLARITY of a diamond is its cleanliness.A diamond is clean if it has no inclusions or blemishes (scratches). Clarity is graded from flawless (IF/ F) to imperfect  (I)  as  per  GIA standards
at a magnification of 10X.  Inclusions  are  not  visible to  the naked eye for grades from IF/F to SI1-SI2. Grades upto SI are tolerable if the other 3 Cs are within  the ideal range and your purse.
Some inclusions can be hidden by a mounting . But if they are on top or in the middle of dianond  light dispersion is affected , so less brilliance is got from the stone.
(6) COLOR :  GIA's  color scale ranges  from  Grade "D"  for colorless diamonds  (most valuable)  to  Grade "Z"  for brownish tint stones  (least valuable). Diamonds  with Grades K- Z are suitable to be set in yellow gold. Diamonds with Grades D-J are set in white gold. Color Differences  are subtle so its difficult to see the difference between E and F. Hence colors are graded under controlled
lighting conditions.
Diamonds with a vibrant shade of rarer colors like pink, blue, black, red etc.are  called   as FANCY  diamonds. They are judged on a different color scale other than D - Z .

(7) CARAT :  Diamond Weight is measured in "carats" and "points" . One hundred points equals one carat , 50 points measure half carat, 25 points measure one fourth carat and so on. Although carat weight is the most obvious factor in the grading of a diamond, bigger is not always better.

A diamond with lower caratage , but with attributes like better color or better clarity would command more premium than a larger diamond with lesser color and clarity quality.
